『鳥取県の民家』を訪ねて（37）
失われゆく古民家（２）－鳥取市立川吉村家住宅
鳥取市立川町にある新聞No.22吉村家住宅です。新聞掲載後四半世紀を経て国の登録有形文化財（1998）になりました。鳥取市最初の登録文化財です。現地を訪れると、外観が新聞掲載当時のままだったのですぐに分かりました。ただ、茶色ジの瓦屋根と青黒い瓦屋根の立派な民家が二軒続いており、どちらが新聞掲載の建物なのかが分かりませんでした。ベルを鳴らして出てきてくださった男性にお話を聞くことにしました。茶色の瓦屋根が本家であり、青黒い瓦屋根は分家であり、その男性は本家の管理係（留守番）だそうです。しかし、本家の今のご当主が内部公開及び個人情報の開示はNGだそうで、分家についてと民家の変容ついてお話ししてくださいました。

新聞によると、吉村家は富豪の代表的な一族であり、民家は明治16年頃の建築であるとされています。このころは廃藩に伴い大工たちが仕事を失うことが多く、江戸の掟が解禁されたタイミングも相まって、大工たちの腕を振るう一大仕事で建てられた民家であったと記されています。道路の拡張、鳥取地震の被害にも揺らがず、往時の威厳を両家ともそのまま現代に伝えています。また、茶室を別棟にせず、主屋内の一部屋にしていた点など、鳥取の上流町家であったことがうかがえます。品格のある土蔵造の瓦葺き民家で、本家・分家とも10年以上前に瓦を葺き替え、壁の塗り直しをおこなったとのことです。現在、分家のご当主は関東にいらして、年に数回戻ってきているいるけれども、通常は空き家になっているとのことです。
せっかく登録文化財になったのに、内部の公開・活用が一切なされていないことを残念に思いました。民家変容パターンはE-1類ですが、厳密に言うと、E-1類は「指定」民家ですから、このパターンの名称を変更する必要がありそうです。
今も変わらぬ立川の町家
この日（9月3日）の調査の最後は立川町に所在する新聞No.11岩田家住宅です。道路沿いにある近隣の家は新築が多く、古風な家もなくはないのですが少数であり、住宅街の一角で岩田家は存在感を放っていました。車が止まっていたのでもしかしたら空き家ではないように感じました。今回はどなたにもお会いませんでした。2014年に登録文化財になった岩田家は新聞掲載時の姿を残しています。
新聞（1974）新聞によると、町家が軒を連ねるこの道は昔、賑やかな町人たちの活気あふれる通りであったそうです。吉村家や岩田家はいわゆる土蔵造ですが、これは明治期以降の防火対策として土蔵式の壁が取り入れられたもので、内部は普通の町家です。
特徴的なのは茶室です。鳥取の上流町家には茶室を特別な別棟として設けず、主屋内の一部屋を居間兼茶室としていた習慣がありました。茶が日常と融合している「生活茶道」であったと記されています。また、庭の見晴らしも良く、全体的に家の床が低いこともあり、庭と一体になれる空間です。こちらも庭の鑑賞と日常が融合していたことがうかがえます。多少改造されて茶室へのアプローチが変わったらしいのですが、江戸時代から新聞掲載時まで内部はほとんど変わっていなかったと記載されています。今回はヒアリングができず、外観だけしか見ることができなかったため、機をみて再訪しようと考えています。
民家変容パターンはE-1類です。上に述べたように、岩田家の場合も「登録」ですから、定義の再考が必要でしょう。
今回の調査で7件回ったのですが、一人であったのもありとても疲れました。自身の手際の悪さを痛感しながらも問題点がたくさん見え、次につなげられそうな内容も多く発見しました。また、ヒアリングに応じてくださった皆様、とくに西蓮寺、龍岩寺の住職さんにはたくさん助けていただき、応援していただきました。先生からは良い経験だとコメントをいただきました、まだまだ精進したいと考えています。（八木部長）
