行基縁りの地を往く (3) - 土塔と八角円堂
法隆寺西円堂
法隆寺西院伽藍北西の小高い場所に建つ八角円堂。現存する遺構は鎌倉時代建長2年（1250）の再建だが、当初は養老2年（718）に光明皇后の母、橘夫人の発願によって、行基が建立したという寺伝がある。全体に古代の趣きをよく残す。とくに注目されるのは正面の向拝である。円堂から独立する四本柱で片流れの屋根を支える。ただし、向拝垂木上端の位置は本体の連子窓の楣の位置にあわせており、向拝の屋根面は八角堂屋根とほぼ接している。正面から遠望するに錣葺き風にみえる。八角堂本体と向拝・裳階の位置関係は参考に値する。
以下に西円堂の建築年代・構造形式・細部を示す。
〈構造形式〉 八角円堂一重本瓦葺
〈年代〉 行基創建の伝承あり（寺伝）：養老2年（718） 再建：鎌倉時代 建長2年（1250）
〈本体細部〉 基壇：壇上積 礎石建 軸部： 角柱（八角形）8本 地長押・腰長押・内法長押
軒：ニ軒角垂木 平三斗 中備 間斗束
柱間装置：四面扉（板扉4枚）、残り四面は壁 正面に連子窓
〈内部〉 堂の中央に薬師如来座像を安置する。
〈向拝〉 礎石建 几帳面取角柱 大斗肘木 一軒角垂木 （小霞）
